The Quarks are the robot servants of the Dominators and help in colonising planet for their masters and to take the natives back to their home-world to become slaves. This means that with more slaves on their home-world, more Quarks can be used for the war effort. Short in stature, the Quarks feature weaponry built into their folding arms and have powerful sensor equipment. They are powered by ultrasound and can exchange power with each other or use their arm-sockets to power other devices. They speak in a high-pitched voice and communicate with each other using beeps and squeals. For a Quark, a double beep means confirmation of an order. The Quarks are programmed to obey the more senior Dominator, which becomes a problem for Toba when he tries commit treason against his leader, Rago.

A mysterious energy sphere implants itself inside Moya and envelops Crichton. When Aeryn fires upon it, it ejects not one, but three Crichtons! One of them is the original, one of them is a de-evolved ‘Ape-Man Crichton’, and the other is a super-evolved ‘Future Crichton’. The energy sphere turns out to be a dimensional portal, and a transmission from this portal demands that unless one of the Crichtons is sent back, Moya will be pulled though in her entirety. It seems obvious to everyone to send the ape-Crichton back, but when he cannot be found, the original Crichton finds himself at the bottom of the evolutionary ladder.

After a haunted house and an abandoned railway station, the series starts to move into a more sci-fi direction in the third assignment of Sapphire and Steel. While the series does very much have a sci-fi core, it also as a lot of horror elements which often ends up pushing the sci-fi stuff to the background, especially in the previous story. Now we head to the opposite end of the spectrum with a story that has sci-fi very much in the forefront with a time capsule from the thirty-fifth century containing a family sent to study life in the twentieth century. This itself gives a very unique set up to the story as rather than objects from the past being the anachronism that causes all the trouble, it’s an object from the future that is trying to tamper with Time. This story is also slightly shorter than the last part at a length of six parts and is once again written by P J Hammond, now let’s take a closer look.

The Pyrovile are a race of volcanic giants made out of stone and living magma. They come from the lost planet of Pyrovilia, which we later learn was taken from its current point in time and space by the Daleks. With their planet gone they went out to find a new one and choose the planet Earth and sought to harness the volcanic power of Vesuvius in ancient Pompeii so that they can transform the human race into a new race of Pyroviles. However, the Earth was not right for their species in its current state, so they planned to use Vesuvius’s volcanic power to boil away the oceans and make it like their original home planet. The Pyroviles themselves can breath fire and survive in great temperatures but they are not without weakness. They can be defeated by water and it turns them into solid stone and they crumble to death.

Sapphire and Steel : Assignment 2

April 17, 2014 in Cult TV, Guest Blogs by GuestBlogs

sapphireandsteel2106

The second assignment of Sapphire and Steel is both longest and notoriously the scariest of all the stories. This story was again written by P J Hammond, who also envisioned and created the series, and it is eight parts long. Again, keeping to the same formula of small sets and minimal casts, its hard to believe that it’s able to sustain itself for eight parts but it does so surprisingly well. While there are moments which feel quite padded out it still manages to keep itself going and there are times where it flies by surprisingly quickly.
