sapphireandsteel6-1

From an old house to an abandoned railway station. From a futuristic time vessel then to a modern day apartment. Now from a 1930’s style dinner party to our final destination, a seemingly abandoned roadside café where time has stopped and the only clue is two humans who claim to be from 1948. This is it, the final assignment for Sapphire and Steel. Series creator P J Hammond returns to write this final four part story. Unlike the other assignments, this one directly relates to Sapphire and Steel and where they come from. While we are still left basically in the dark at the end of this story we do get more tantalising hints as to who they really are in this than in any other story.

Urbankans1

The Urbankans were a race of frog-like bipeds from the planet Urbanka. While they were once organic and still appear that way, they are actually androids controlled by silicon chips which are more complex than a human brain. They are made by created by recording the memory of the original being and then disposing of the body while imprinting their memories onto a chip. This would mean that they could live forever. The same process was also performed on some humans who the Urbankans collected in their previous visits. There were different groups from different religions and times, such as Ancient Greeks and Mayans, all living together on this one vast ship for thousands of years. Only the leaders of the ethnic groups remained unaltered, the rest were limited and became nothing more than simple workers. As a form of entertainment, each ethnic group would perform different dances and rituals to each other.

Farscape : The Ugly Truth

May 24, 2014 in Farscape by Firebird

Crais invites Crichton, Aeryn, D’Argo, Zhaan and Stark on board Talyn, and announces that he is going to remove the young gunship’s weapons and replace them with a non-lethal Plokavian weapon called a ‘Dampening Net’. When the Plokavians arrive with the device, Talyn suddenly targets and destroys one of their vessels! Crichton and the others are captured after Crais starbursts away with Talyn, and their situation becomes a desperate ‘whodunnit’. Each is interrogated in turn by the Plokavians, who intend to execute the person they deem responsible.

Synopsis

It may not be the full meaning of the title, but after taking a look at the Plokavians it’s hard not to think that ‘ugly’ means them.

Sapphire and Steel : Assignment 5

sapphireandsteel2

After ghost stories and futuristic tales, we finally get onto Sapphire and Steel’s take on a murder mystery, where a bargain with Time could lead to the destruction of the entire human race. This fifth assignment is six parts long and is written by Don Houghton and Anthony Read, making it the only story not to be written by the series’ creator, P J Hammond. Some may remember these from their writing credits on Doctor Who, with Don Houghton writing stories such as Inferno and Anthony Read being script editor for a while. There are some distinct differences in the writing from previous stories with the most prominent being the fact that Sapphire and Steel are undercover, which works for this story given the style of the murder mystery. Still it very much feels like Sapphire and Steel despite these differences and Sapphire and Steel are quite possibly at their best here, although I’m not sure as to how much input P J Hammond actually had in this story.

Just then a Klingon battle cruiser arrives. Sulu reports that the Klingon ship is heavily damaged. The alien entity gains control of the Enterprise and manipulates each side into fighting the other as it feeds off their negative emotions. Terileptils1

Terileptils are bipedal reptiles with a love of art and beauty who banish their criminals to the prison planet of Raaga where they toil away in the tinclavic mines for the rest of their lives. A small group of these criminals stole a ship and escaped from Raaga, but crashed landed on Earth in the seventeenth century. Only four survived the crash and one died following it, leaving only three still alive. Teileptils naturally breath soliton gas (which is extremely volatile when mixed with oxygen) but can survive in Earth’s atmosphere. Nevertheless, the Terileptils on Earth still create a soliton gas generator to create an atmosphere more suitable for their lungs. Unable to return to their home planet, the Terileptil convicts intend to make Earth in their new world, but they must first wipe out the native population.
