So I been watching it again with my Dad (we’re on Trespass) and I just wanted to know how others feel about the first episodes of the show not that it is at its end?
Overall it’s not as bad as I thought it would be looking back but there’s some annoyances or reoccurring things that I find to be annoying. What stands out the most is Anakin’s voice he just sounds so high pitch and Ahsoka as well sounds weird but it gets a bit better as the season goes on.
But the real reason I just can’t seem to like this season as much is the characters, maybe some people enjoy the variety in Jedi but I sort of find it out of place that they hop to a new character every episode. Plo-Koon, Luminara, Aayla, Kit Fisto, Yoda, Anakin, Obi-Wan idk why just takes something away especially when those Jedi (most) are only a main character for one maybe two episodes. Also goes for jumping to a new separatist leader every episode as well seems they felt the need to introduce everyone within the first 11 episodes (got to say I have little complaints with the other 11 though).
Also Grievous being terribly weak when he is on screen is another really bad thing but I do enjoy his presence. And it’s not like he actually is weak, he had tons of trophies and is a great battle mind but his portrayal of running or being defeated is always “plot demands it” situations…. Probably my biggest complaint with the show in general is how the separatists never win (mainly Grievous). Sidious winning isn’t a win for them but a win for the Empire. They “talk” of the separatist wins and the struggles in Narration only but never show it….
Overall I’d say 7.5/10 for season 1. 6/10 for the first 10 (too many characters) but 9/10 for the last 12.
July 12, 2015 at 4:15 am #64437Also the droid episodes with Goldie does anyone else notice a very different animation here? I bet these where either the first ones they did or some of the last ones they added in with little budget.
It almost looks like the story reel episodes but just more polished.
July 12, 2015 at 4:30 am #64439Weren’t the droid episodes the first ones produced? I remember hearing that…
I rarely rewatch Season 1. Season 2, sometimes. But the show to me is basically Season 3 onwards. 😛
July 12, 2015 at 4:35 am #64440Yeah pretty much Nam that’s why we watched Nightsisters Arc and beyond before. To me Seasons 2-6 are much of the same with varying quality of story (Season 5 first half and Season 3 first half being low points). But season 1 is different, the feel idk.
They where probably the first ones the voices and animation are just so different there with the first episode in the duo being extremely weird.
July 12, 2015 at 4:42 am #64441I can’t watch Season 1 because of Anakin’s voice. 😆 It’s so odd.
But your point about different Jedi appearing – I liked that about Season 1. We already had the movies to cover Anakin and Obi-Wan – it makes sense for a TV series to cover more of the Jedi. By Seasons 3, everything was done with Anakin and Obi-Wan and it began to be annoying.
July 12, 2015 at 5:31 am #64443I think there time to together became better like the Utapau arc 😛 they where pretty funny.
Yeah Nam but those Jedi never really reappeared, Kit spoke like once in Brain Invaders, Aayla I don’t think did anything ever again, Luminara had like two episodes after. If they actually expanded on some of those Jedi I’d be more forgiving of having them all appear.
Plo Koon appeared often but that’s because he has one of the highest honours of being the official Jedi rescue commander.
Anakin and Obi-Wan where still meant to be the main characters
July 12, 2015 at 11:09 am #64462Plo Koon was appeared often because he’s DF’s favourite.
Season 1: Best thing about it was that it was more fun. I appreciate a plot with depth but sometimes simplicity is better. One thing that makes this season stand apart from the rest is the character variety for both the heroes and villains. Everyone had their own personalities and traits which kept their interactions fresh. It’s a shame this aspect wasn’t carried over after Season 2. And the shorter story arcs helped keep up momentum even if some of those stories weren’t good.
Dooku was portrayed at his best here. He actually comes across as the charismatic political idealist described in AOTC instead of the generic moustache-twirling genocidal lunatic from later on. But captured by pirates? Oh, please. They could have used another important CIS figure that. Conversely Grievous was severely lacking. Defeated in several consecutive episodes then disappeared for about a year before returning nearly half-way through Season 2…only to lose again. What a joke. It’s a shame his and Dooku’s models were never updated before the end. This is more of a show complaint but it’s more prominent here than anywhere else: CIS always losing and so easily. The only thing that could be considered a victory (from this season) is Ventress escaping with Nute Gunray. Despite them essentially being villains of the week, Wat Tambor, Nuvo Vindi and Lok Durd were all unique and not clones of one another. It’s a shame they weren’t featured again. Although I will say Vindi comes across a better villain on one page of The Bounter Hunters Guild handbook than in his episodes here.
Moving on, the writing and dialogue was very up-and-down. We go from something like The Gungan General to Trespass to Blue Shadow Virus . One step forward, two steps back. The R2 episodes in particular are so full of plot holes that I’m surprised the characters didn’t fall into one. Voice acting was spotty. Ahsoka’s high-pitch wailing was awfully grating and so were her mannerisms and nicknames for other characters. The animation while sub-par compared to now, was much more detailed than other animated shows at the time. Main issues would be characters being completely weightless and robotic.
A big MEH overall, but better than Seasons 3, 5 and 6.
July 12, 2015 at 6:47 pm #64468I honestly think Season 6 is the second best season 😛 Fives arc and Yoda arc where brilliant.
Yeah I hated how the CIS always lost, they “talk” about the victories but the way you see them it’s amazing that the war wasn’t over in a year.
Idk if that’s a victory it’s just cleaning up the mess made earlier.
July 13, 2015 at 4:27 am #64483Okay the Blue Shadow Virus plot line is kind of terrible. Why would Palpatine want something like that? Makes no sense what so ever. And I don’t suppose Vindi just walked in a cruiser grabbed a bunch of battle droids and left for Naboo so…\
Also same goes for the Kamino plot line why does Sidious want to invade that planet…}
We’re going to watch Ryloth and the finale tomorrow.
July 13, 2015 at 3:49 pm #64490To be fair the Republic are always attacking droid factories so it would seem odd for the CIS to not attack the Republic’s own.
July 13, 2015 at 4:59 pm #64491They don’t attack them nearly enough. Since the war for some reason is being run by Jedi there compassion usually leads them to help “innocents” rather then targets of more strategic value.
July 13, 2015 at 6:53 pm #64497I liked the jumping between different Jedi too. That’s one of the things I missed from later seasons. And the arc lengths were also better. I don’t mind 4 episode arcs, but I don’t see why they all had to switch almost only doing that. A single or 2 episode arc here and there would be fine.
I did miss seeing more CIS/Grievous victories. I didn’t hate Grievous’ portrayal as a coward, but I missed seeing some of his other qualities, like being a brilliant tactician.
I think that might be a bit of a problem with DF. He doesn’t seem overly confident or happy telling the sadder stories.July 13, 2015 at 7:01 pm #64498The show started out as a “children’s show” so I guess they had reason to make it all Republic victories in battle. But, by Season 6, it would be a lie to say that the good side suffered no losses. (Ahsoka, Fives, Satine, Ventress, Steela, etc)
Just… no losses by the Confederacy in battle. 😛
July 13, 2015 at 8:32 pm #64503None of those are casualties of war really… Satine was neutral, Steela was also considered neutral (she wasn’t really important though), Ahsoka left the Jedi (who are the reason the Republic fails), Ventress I wouldn’t put on the “good side” either really and Fives well idk he isn’t that major in the grand scope of thing but he did die trying to figure out the big plot.
July 13, 2015 at 8:33 pm #64504But most of those people are still neutral
July 14, 2015 at 12:41 am #64509But they were all more related to the heroes than the villains.
July 14, 2015 at 4:07 am #64513Still they’re not really losses for the good guys IMO (The Republic) thing is they can never actually lose because of the way things are structured in the war.
