uneathly

On Saturday the 23rd of November in the year 1963, a legend was born. Two school teachers worried about their pupil follow her home into a junk yard. Inside they find an old police box and are suddenly whipped off into time and space by a man who called himself the Doctor.

A humble beginning which lead into 50 years worth of adventures.

Very different to the adventures we have today. It’s hard to believe it’s the same show. The Doctor is selfish, only caring about himself and his granddaughter, Susan. It is in Ian and Barbara that we find comfort, they become our view into the show and are probably the most important companions in the shows history. They set the Doctor on the path which he sticks to for the rest of the series, helping everyone he can and saving world from evil.

One other difference you may notice is that there are no monsters in this tale. No evil plot to take over the world or crazed villains hellbent on destruction. Just our four heroes merely trying to survive and cavemen trying to make fire.

The first episode is amazing, then next three are a bit tedious. There’s not a lot going on with the Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Susan stuck in a cave for a lot of the time thinking of ways to escape. Nevertheless it really is an unmissable serial simply because it’s the first ever Doctor Who story. It is a far cry from what we’re used to today but worth the watch to find out about how the legend began. It’s available as part of the Beginning box set along with two other serials which I will also be reviewing soon. In the meantime you can watch a clip from the very first serial.
